Rachel (also recommended by LaRaie, Jason, Merril, Janet, Nicole, Annie, and counting.)Ĭoming-of-age novel meets murder mystery. This book has rarely failed to delight anyone to whom we've recommended it. But-but what happens next?! But that is the charm of Blue Van Meer, with a head full of more books than she knows what to do with and a melancholy past and a claustrophobic present that threaten to engulf her. The precocious young narrator is so full of asides and rambling memories-right in the middle of things happening-that you sometimes want to shake her. The plot is enthralling, but the writer seems to almost intentionally want to frustrate the reader in that drive for plot. In a weird sort of way, this book is a page-turner. This book, both coming-of-age story and murder mystery, is at once charming, sad, and funny, and will make you forget to breathe again and again.
